Stephen was hired as an articling student with Wise Scheible Barkauskas upon graduation from law school, and continues to work with the firm as a full-time associate.
Legal proceedings are often daunting, and arise in difficult moments when a family is in crisis. Stephen’s practice is focused on helping his clients understand the legal options available to them, and the practical implications involved with each one. From there, Stephen works with each client to build a unique strategy tailored to their needs. It is important that Stephen’s clients feel that he helps them to take steps that are goal oriented, while pursuing strategies to minimize negative effects of conflict during a separation and divorce. A reasoned, practical, and cost-effective approach has helped Stephen achieve success for his clients early in his career. Stephen emphasizes that he and his clients work as a team.
Community service is a cornerstone of Stephen’s character. He played football competitively for many years, and once he hung up his pad, he coached Calgary high school football for 7 years at three different schools, winning two championships. While completing his undergrad, Stephen became involved in Calgary Law Day and became a member of the Canadian Bar Association’s Law Day Committee.
Stephen received his Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. While attending there, he was elected by the student body to the Society of Law Student’s Executive as the Canadian Bar Association Liaison. Through his work with the CBA he developed an initiative to help students during stressful exam periods, and helped create volunteer positions across British Columbia for his colleagues to be able to gain practical experience. Stephen has since returned to his position on the CBA Law Day Committee, and hopes to see you there in April. Stephen volunteers yearly for both Sagesse and Servants Anonymous in Calgary.
Stephen’s roots in Calgary are far-reaching. In the time between his undergraduate studies and his attendance at law school, Stephen worked for two of Calgary’s largest oil and gas companies as a Document Control Technician. This experience helped Stephen develop a strong sense of professionalism and hard work, as well as understanding and connections in one of Calgary’s foundational economic areas.
Stephen’s passions include football, reading, cooking, fitness classes (spin and boxing), slo-pitch, and spending time at Shuswap Lake, where his family originally settled in 1913.
